The Boxall Profile® Online is a digital version of the Boxall Profile® assessment, first developed by educational psychologist Marjorie Boxall and Marion Bennathan.
The Boxall Profile® assessment tool was designed in response to the demand for a more precise way of measuring and monitoring pupils' needs and wellbeing, their progress and the impact of practitioners' work. Perhaps the most important outcome of the assessment tool is to enhance practitioners' confidence, in a classroom setting, a nurture group or even the whole setting, as they learn that there are tangible reasons for the pupils’ difficulties.
The Boxall Profile® was cited by the Department for Education as the most popular assessment tool in England.
How it can help
The Boxall Profile® Online helps with:
- Early identification assessment - supporting staff to develop their observational skills and their understanding of children and young people's difficulties and behaviours
- Target setting and intervention - helping to set individualised, achievable targets that reinforce target behaviour and skills
- Progress tracking - assisting with reviewing children and young people's target behaviour
- Whole-class planning - developing understanding of trends in behaviour to create bespoke learning plans to support whole-class learning
Key features
Key functionality includes:
- Easy-to-use scoring - compatible with most devices
- Anonymised tracking - re-assessing term-to-term, comparing results and tracking progress.
- Risk analysis - showing Boxall Profile® results in three groups (high risk, low risk and no apparent difficulties) to help with whole-school early identification

An executive summary of our latest research on the Boxall Profile®, titled Now You See Us, can be viewed here
This is a research project looking into the use of whole-school assessment and looks at the outcomes of this.
The Boxall Profile® provides teachers and professionals working with children and young people with an insight into their world, allowing them to think about what might lie behind challenging behaviour and what their needs might be. Once needs have been identified, the Boxall Profile® can be used to plan and review the support offered to pupils in school. It provides a framework for the structured observation of children and young people. The focus is not on classifying children but on looking at their pattern of functioning and seeing where help is needed. The Boxall Profile® is not a diagnostic tool for any concerns.
